No More Camel or Horse Rides at the Pyramids of Giza? Here’s the Truth

News of camel and horse rides being officially stopped around the Pyramids of Giza have been circulating, with the upgrade that visitors will now explore the site using electric buses and carts as part of a new plan focused on improving animal welfare.

However, as shared with us by a representative of PETA, this is not factual. These misinterpreted claims stem from a government Circular issued earlier this year prohibiting animal performances and experiences in hotels and similar venues. No measures have been introduced to end or phase out the use of horses and camels for rides at the pyramids. They have also confirmed this with Orascom this week.

Why should it Change?

For years, animal welfare groups have raised concerns about the conditions many working camels and horses face, including long hours, exhaustion, and mistreatment. The new system aims to give visitors a smoother way to get around while protecting the animals that were once used for rides.

PETA shared with us a video from May of 2026 showing a distressed horse at the pyramids continuing to be worked to death and are then discarded outside the pyramid walls.

Hoping for a Move Towards Ethical Tourism

The change could be part of a wider shift towards ethical tourism, which encourages travelers to enjoy destinations without supporting attractions that rely on animal exploitation.
